“Last fall, our neighbor Lawrence from across the street invited our family to his family’s cookout.
I had already known Lawrence to be the kind of man to give and serve others. He once brought over a tall ladder after finding my stubborn self stuck on the roof trying to clean the gutters—a roof my husband Derrick had already decided was too steep to be on. When it snows I see Lawrence spreading salt on the sidewalks and front porches of others’ homes. My two young boys have known him to bring them treasures like toys or candy, just because.
Even while knowing all of this, I was still in awe when we went to the cookout and saw Lawrence grilling up a storm for his family. This man had stations for different meat—fish, chicken, sausage, hot dogs, burgers, ribs. It was a feast! Taking in the sight of Lawrence in his element cooking, his family chatting and playing, together all around him, was a moment that struck me as a sacred heartbeat of family life.”
