“A dear friend took this photo when she noticed some kiddos peering over a playground fence at our church. What I love about this moment is the way each kid responds with their own personality to her request to photograph them. All kinds of reactions—bold, fierce, shy, sweet.
In addition to the facial expressions, I love their colorful, puffy, winter jackets, their beautiful variety of brown skin tones, the shadows their body gestures make on the fence.
When painting this I chose to stain the natural birch wood of the panel to create the fence instead of painting a fence over a white-gessoed panel so as to let the fence feel more like negative space, allowing their presence to pop. It was a fun piece to paint! And a reminder to me of the individuality each of us carry. ”
